Philosophy of Music Education
By: Shawna Beeler
I believe that the children I am teaching are our future. Every child needs a secure, stimulating, safe environment in which to learn. Through music education I can help to foster each individual’s growth musically, emotionally, physically, intellectually, and socially. I endeavor to provide every student the opportunity to learn to the best of his or her ability by assuming leadership roles, exhibiting self-discipline, performing music alone and with others, reading and writing musical notation, analyzing, describing, and evaluating music, creating music, working as a team, participating, and most important, fostering fellowship through music with an open and curious mind.
Equally important to growing each individual person on an intellectual basis is allowing a safe, creative, curriculum based environment to help students on the path to self-discovery; each student should have ownership in the music curriculum. A curriculum based on student interests motivates a passion and interest to learn. Furthermore, allowing for input, generating and brainstorming ideas, improvising, and allowing students that ownership allows for rich, diverse lesson plans that I could not have initially planned without the input of so many unique learners. Through ownership in the curriculum, goals are set, accomplished, and a greater sense of self-worth and achievement can take place.
As an educator, my goal and hope is to instill on today’s youth the importance of music education and love of learning as well as opening myself up to change and continuous growth. I will continue to learn new teaching strategies and philosophies while learning from each child, parents, the community, administrators, and colleagues/peers. I will teach music because it is unique and essential to the curriculum. As a teacher, I will assume the responsibility of educating the entire individual and will do so through music because it reaches abstract human elements unreachable to any other medium. I will help students with different needs and do so using differentiation to reach each individual learner. Finally, I will provide the environment, tools, and compassion needed to explore various aspects of music and will do so responsibly, positively, and professionally while building upon my knowledge and passion for the fine arts.
